  The Lord is my shepherd.
 I shall not want.

 He makes me lie down
 in green pastures,

He leads me beside
quiet waters.

He restores my soul.

He guides me in the path of righteousness
 for his name's sake.

Even though I walk
through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil.

  For you are with me.
Your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil.

 My cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy
 will follow me
all the days of my life.

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Comments about Psalm 23 from our reader, Rev. Jerry Jones

It might surprise you, but I bristle when likened to a sheep. As a farmer, I found sheep to be watery-eyed, weak willed, and rather thoughtless creatures. When it rains, they smell bad. When they sweat, they smell even worse. You can encourage a hundred sheep to run (not walk) up a plank into the slaughter house if you get just one to make the trip. All will blindly follow even if it means certain death. All in all, my farming roots and experience with sheep leave these wooly with much to be desired.

So, when I hear the words, "The Lord is my shepherd..." I am keenly aware of my neediness and just how gently and lovingly God accepts me in my flawed state.

Jerry Jones is the Senior Pastor at the First Congregational Church in Greenville Michigan. He is a second career clergy, the first thirty years of his working career were a sharp contrast to leading a flock of faithful. Jones milked cows and fed hogs. He owned and operated Coreland Farms in southern Michigan, where he first felt the call to ministry.

He attended Bangor Theological Seminary and received a graduate degree for Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a gifted story teller who draws from a rich pool of colorful characters and extraordinary folk he knew as a farmer.

Anne Wakenhut provides the musical setting for this reading with her Celtic harp and keyboard.
